देवस्तुतिवर्णनम् (Deva-stuti-varṇana) — “Description of the Gods’ Hymn/Praise”
मुहुः शिवेति भाषंतो देवा धैर्यसमन्विताः । कोटिसंख्यं तदा कृत्वा स्थितास्ते मुनिसत्तम
muhuḥ śiveti bhāṣaṃto devā dhairyasamanvitāḥ | koṭisaṃkhyaṃ tadā kṛtvā sthitāste munisattama
O best of sages, the gods—steadfast in courage—repeatedly cried out “Śiva! Śiva!”, and then, forming themselves into a host numbering in crores, they stood firm.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
Mantra: śiva iti (nāma-japa: repeated utterance of ‘Śiva’)
Type: stotra
Role: nurturing
It highlights Nāma-smaraṇa—remembrance of Śiva’s name—as a source of inner steadiness (dhairya) and divine protection, showing that refuge in Pati (Śiva) strengthens even the devas amid conflict.
By repeatedly invoking “Śiva,” the devas turn to Saguna Śiva as accessible refuge; in Purāṇic practice this same devotion is expressed through Linga-worship, where the name, form, and presence of Śiva converge for the devotee.
Japa of Śiva-nāma—especially the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—as steady repetition to cultivate courage and one-pointedness; it can be paired with simple Linga-dhyāna for grounding in devotion.
