द्वन्द्वयुद्धवर्णनम् / Description of the Duel-Combats
एवं बभूव तत्रैव कार्तिकेयनिशुंभयोः । आहवो हि महान्व्यास वीरशब्दं प्रगर्जतोः
evaṃ babhūva tatraiva kārtikeyaniśuṃbhayoḥ | āhavo hi mahānvyāsa vīraśabdaṃ pragarjatoḥ
Thus, O great Vyāsa, right there itself a mighty battle arose between Kārtikeya and Niśumbha, as both roared aloud with heroic cries.

Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
It frames the battle as a dharmic event: Skanda (Kārtikeya), empowered by Shiva’s order, confronts demonic force, symbolizing the subduing of egoic pride and adharma through divine resolve.
Kārtikeya acts as Shiva’s manifest power in the world (saguṇa expression of grace and protection). Remembering such episodes strengthens devotion to Shiva’s protective aspect, even while the Linga points to the transcendent (nirguṇa) reality.
Contemplate Skanda as Shiva’s śakti in action and repeat the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” for inner courage; optionally apply Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) as a reminder that all pride and fear are reduced to ash before Shiva.
