द्वन्द्वयुद्धवर्णनम् / Description of the Duel-Combats
अभ्यगादथ वेगेन स दैत्येन्द्रो महाबलः । विगणय्य हृदा तं वै वीरभद्रं रुषान्वितः
abhyagādatha vegena sa daityendro mahābalaḥ | vigaṇayya hṛdā taṃ vai vīrabhadraṃ ruṣānvitaḥ
Then that mighty Daitya king rushed forward with great speed; filled with anger, he inwardly made light of Vīrabhadra, holding him of no account.
Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
The verse highlights how anger and pride cloud discernment: the Daitya lord, driven by wrath, dismisses Vīrabhadra—symbolizing the soul’s tendency to underestimate divine grace and righteous power, which in Shaiva Siddhanta leads to bondage (pāśa) through ego (ahaṅkāra).
Vīrabhadra embodies Saguna Shiva’s protective, corrective energy—Shiva’s manifested power that restores dharma when it is violated. Linga-worship cultivates reverence and surrender, the opposite of the Daitya’s inner contempt shown here.
A practical takeaway is to counter anger with japa of the Panchakshara mantra (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and to adopt humility through Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) remembrance—seeing the body and ego as transient, thereby reducing the impulse to disregard the divine.
