द्वन्द्वयुद्धवर्णनम् / Description of the Duel-Combats
प्रविध्वस्तां ततस्सेनां दृष्ट्वा सागरनन्दनः । रथेनातिपताकेन गणानभिययौ बली
pravidhvastāṃ tatassenāṃ dṛṣṭvā sāgaranandanaḥ | rathenātipatākena gaṇānabhiyayau balī
Seeing that army utterly shattered, the mighty son of Sagara advanced against Shiva’s gaṇas, mounting a chariot marked by an exceedingly lofty banner.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
The verse highlights how worldly power (a mighty warrior with a grand banner) still moves within the limits of Shiva’s divine order, represented by the gaṇas; it points to the Shaiva Siddhanta emphasis that true strength is alignment with Pati (Shiva), not mere martial pride.
In Saguna Shiva worship, Shiva’s presence is honored not only in the Liṅga but also through His śakti-filled manifestations—such as the gaṇas—who execute His will; remembering them supports devotion to Shiva as the active Lord who protects dharma.
A practical takeaway is to cultivate śaraṇāgati (refuge) through japa of the Pañcākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—and to apply vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) as a reminder that ego and display (like a lofty banner) are to be offered into Shiva’s sovereignty.
