जालन्धरस्य दूतप्रेषणम् — Jalandhara Sends an Envoy to Kailāsa
The Provocation of Śiva
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति शंभोर्वरं प्राप्य पुरुषः प्रजहर्ष सः । तदाप्रभृति देवेश द्वारे कीर्तिमुखः स्थितः
sanatkumāra uvāca | iti śaṃbhorvaraṃ prāpya puruṣaḥ prajaharṣa saḥ | tadāprabhṛti deveśa dvāre kīrtimukhaḥ sthitaḥ
Sanatkumāra said: “Thus, having obtained the boon from Śambhu (Lord Śiva), that person rejoiced greatly. From that time onward, O Lord of the gods, Kīrtimukha remained stationed at the doorway.”
Sanatkumara
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
It highlights Śiva’s grace (anugraha): once the boon is received, the transformed being becomes a guardian at the threshold, symbolizing that ego and hostility, when surrendered to Śiva, are converted into protective devotion.
In Saguna worship, Śiva is approached as the compassionate Lord who grants boons and purifies the devotee; the presence of Kīrtimukha at the doorway reflects the sanctity of entering Śiva’s space—approaching the Liṅga with reverence, restraint, and surrender.
A practical takeaway is threshold-discipline: before worship, calm the mind, take refuge in Śiva with the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), and enter the shrine with humility—symbolically leaving pride and aggression at the door.
