जालन्धरस्य दूतप्रेषणम् — Jalandhara Sends an Envoy to Kailāsa
The Provocation of Śiva
प्रणनाम च तं गर्वात्तत्तेजः क्रांतविग्रहः । निकटं गतवाञ्छंभोस्स दूतो राहुसंज्ञकः
praṇanāma ca taṃ garvāttattejaḥ krāṃtavigrahaḥ | nikaṭaṃ gatavāñchaṃbhossa dūto rāhusaṃjñakaḥ
Then, though swollen with pride, that messenger—his very body overpowered by the blazing radiance—bowed down and approached nearer to Śambhu. He was known by the name Rāhu.
Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse functions as a narrative prelude in the Jalandhara war-cycle, showing Śiva’s overpowering tejas before which even an arrogant envoy must bow.
Significance: General: darśana of Śambhu’s tejas humbles ahaṅkāra and turns the paśu toward śaraṇāgati (a prerequisite for anugraha).
It shows that even an arrogant being becomes compelled to bow when confronted with Śiva’s tejas—symbolizing how the soul’s ego (ahaṅkāra) is naturally subdued in the presence of Pati, the supreme Lord, and humility becomes the doorway to grace.
Śambhu’s palpable radiance indicates Saguna Śiva—accessible to devotees through worship such as the Liṅga. The verse highlights that approaching Śiva is not merely physical proximity but reverent surrender before His manifest power and compassion.
The key takeaway is praṇāma (prostration) with inner humility before Śiva—supported by japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and a devotional attitude that dissolves pride.
