अध्याय १७ — देवपलायनं, विष्णोः प्रतियुद्धं, जलंधरक्रोधः
Devas’ Rout, Viṣṇu’s Counterattack, and Jalandhara’s Wrath
मर्द्दयंतं च तं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान् प्रस्फुरिताधरः । योद्धुमभ्याययौ वीरो वेगेन हरिणा सह
marddayaṃtaṃ ca taṃ dṛṣṭvā daityān prasphuritādharaḥ | yoddhumabhyāyayau vīro vegena hariṇā saha
Seeing him crushing the Daityas, the heroic one—his lips quivering with wrath—rushed forward at speed to fight, together with Hari (Viṣṇu).
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
It depicts dharma being defended when demonic forces dominate; in Shaiva understanding, such battles symbolize the subduing of inner impurities (mala) that obstruct the soul’s return to Pati (Śiva).
Though the verse is martial, it supports Saguna devotion: devotees remember the Lord’s protective power in form and action, which steadies faith and prepares the mind for deeper contemplation of the formless (Nirguṇa) truth.
Contemplate Shiva’s protection while repeating the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) for courage and inner purification; optionally wear Rudrākṣa and apply Tripuṇḍra as reminders to conquer anger and ego like the Daityas within.
