अध्याय १७ — देवपलायनं, विष्णोः प्रतियुद्धं, जलंधरक्रोधः
Devas’ Rout, Viṣṇu’s Counterattack, and Jalandhara’s Wrath
ततो जलंधरो दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान्वात्याप्रपीडितान् । चुक्रोधाति महादैत्यो देववृन्दभयंकरः
tato jalaṃdharo dṛṣṭvā daityānvātyāprapīḍitān | cukrodhāti mahādaityo devavṛndabhayaṃkaraḥ
Then Jalandhara, seeing the Daityas tormented by the violent windstorm, blazed up with intense anger—he, the mighty demon who was a terror to the hosts of the gods.
Sūta Gosvāmi (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
The verse highlights how suffering and conflict can trigger uncontrolled krodha (wrath), a binding impurity that strengthens adharma; Shaiva teaching points toward mastering such passions through devotion and inner discipline so the soul (paśu) is freed from bonds (pāśa) and turns toward the Lord (Pati).
In the battle setting, fear and agitation dominate the asuric mind; Linga/Saguṇa-Śiva worship is presented in the Purana as a stabilizing refuge—centering the mind on Shiva’s presence rather than reacting with rage, thereby transforming tamas-rajas into sattva.
As an antidote to anger and agitation, japa of the Pañcākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—with calm breath awareness is appropriate; if following Purāṇic practice, apply Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and maintain a steady, non-reactive mind during recitation.
