देवाः वैकुण्ठगमनम् तथा विष्णोः अवतारस्तुतिः | Devas Go to Vaikuṇṭha and Praise Viṣṇu’s Avatāras
वामनाय नमस्तुभ्यमुपेन्द्राख्याय विष्णवे । विप्ररूपेण दैत्येन्द्रं बलिं छलयते विभो
vāmanāya namastubhyamupendrākhyāya viṣṇave | viprarūpeṇa daityendraṃ baliṃ chalayate vibho
Salutations to You, Vāmana—Viṣṇu renowned as Upendra. O all-pervading Lord, assuming the form of a brāhmaṇa, You outwitted Bali, sovereign of the Dānavas.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
It praises divine governance through dharma: even mighty power (Bali) is restrained when it becomes a cause of bondage, and the Lord protects cosmic order—encouraging humility and surrender as Shaiva devotion values.
Though the verse praises Viṣṇu, the Shiva Purana repeatedly teaches reverence to the Lord’s devotees and allied divine powers; such honoring supports Saguna worship—approaching the Supreme (Shiva) through devotion, gratitude, and dharmic alignment.
Practice bhakti with humility: recite the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) while cultivating surrender (śaraṇāgati) and restraint of ego—mirroring Bali’s lesson in offering and renunciation.
