“I have understood the true power of this, exactly as it arose; and you Devas, recall in full how Indra acted when he committed the offence of dishonouring Śiva.”
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: The verse alludes to the ‘Śiva-apamāna’ (insult to Śiva) by Śakra (Indra), a recurring Purāṇic moral-causal theme: divine prosperity and protection withdraw when Śiva is dishonoured, and restoration comes through propitiation and grace.
Significance: Didactic: remembrance of Śiva-apacāra (offence) functions as a warning and as impetus for śaraṇāgati and renewed worship, leading to protection and restoration.
Role: teaching
Offering: pushpa
It highlights that Śiva’s majesty becomes unmistakable when arrogance leads to Śiva-aparādha; remembrance of such incidents is meant to cultivate humility, devotion, and reverence for Pati (Śiva), the supreme Lord beyond the devas.
By stressing the grave consequence of dishonouring Śiva, it indirectly affirms the necessity of respectful Saguna worship—especially of the Śiva-liṅga—performed with purity, humility, and unwavering bhakti rather than pride or mere ritualism.
A practical takeaway is to avoid Śiva-aparādha and perform Śiva-pūjā with repentance and devotion—reciting the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while applying tripuṇḍra (bhasma) as a reminder of humility and surrender.
