भक्तिभेदाः—ज्ञानप्रधानभक्तेः प्रशंसा
Grades of Devotees and the Praise of Knowledge-Centered Devotion
विधिभक्तिं विना नैव भक्तिर्भवति वैष्णवी । विष्णुभक्तिं विना मे न भक्तिः क्वापि प्रजायते
vidhibhaktiṃ vinā naiva bhaktirbhavati vaiṣṇavī | viṣṇubhaktiṃ vinā me na bhaktiḥ kvāpi prajāyate
Without devotion to Vidhī (Brahmā), devotion to Viṣṇu does not truly arise. And without devotion to Viṣṇu, devotion to Me (Śiva) is not born anywhere at all.
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Significance: Teaches a graded harmony of devotion: honoring Brahmā and Viṣṇu supports authentic Śiva-bhakti, reducing deva-nindā and fostering integrated dharma.
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: nurturing
Offering: pushpa
It teaches an integrated path of devotion: reverence for cosmic order (Brahmā/Vidhī) matures into Vaiṣṇava devotion, and that purified devotion culminates in steadfast devotion to Śiva—the supreme Pati—supporting a non-sectarian, stepwise ascent of bhakti.
True worship of the Liṅga (Saguna Śiva as the accessible form) is presented as the fruit of refined devotion; when devotion is disciplined and purified through right reverence (including honoring Viṣṇu), one’s Liṅga-worship becomes steady, free from rivalry, and capable of leading toward Śiva’s grace.
Adopt a non-sectarian daily bhakti discipline: offer worship with purity and humility, include salutations to Viṣṇu and Brahmā before Śiva-pūjā, and then concentrate on Śiva with japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) as the culminating practice.
