भक्तिभेदाः—ज्ञानप्रधानभक्तेः प्रशंसा
Grades of Devotees and the Praise of Knowledge-Centered Devotion
यः करोति त्रिदेवेषु भेदबुद्धिं नराधमः । नरके स वसेन्नूनं यावदाचन्द्रतारकम्
yaḥ karoti trideveṣu bhedabuddhiṃ narādhamaḥ | narake sa vasennūnaṃ yāvadācandratārakam
That lowest of men who entertains a divisive notion among the three gods (Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva) shall surely dwell in hell for as long as the moon and stars endure.
Sūta Gosvāmi (narrating the Purāṇic teaching to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Rudra
Significance: Warns that sectarian bheda-buddhi toward the Trimūrti is a grave spiritual fault (aparādha) that prolongs bondage and suffering, motivating corrective devotion and humility.
Cosmic Event: Long-duration karmic consequence expressed as 'until moon and stars' (ā-candra-tārakam), i.e., near-kalpa-scale endurance.
It condemns sectarian bheda-buddhi (divisive thinking) toward the Tridevas and teaches that such a mind intensifies bondage (pāśa), obstructing right devotion and liberation.
In Linga/Saguna worship, Śiva is revered as the supreme Pati while also honoring the cosmic functions associated with Brahmā and Viṣṇu; the verse warns that disrespectful comparison or denigration of any Deva corrupts worship and its फल (spiritual fruit).
Practice reverential, non-sectarian bhakti: daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") with a mind free from disparagement, and cultivate inner śuddhi (purity) before applying tripuṇḍra/bhasma or wearing rudrākṣa.
