उत्पातवर्णनम् / Description of Portents at Dakṣa’s Sacrifice
सकंपाश्च बभूवुस्ते दीपा वातहता इव । दुःखिताश्चाभवन्सर्वे शस्त्रधाराहता इव
sakaṃpāśca babhūvuste dīpā vātahatā iva | duḥkhitāścābhavansarve śastradhārāhatā iva
They all began to tremble, like lamps struck by a gust of wind; and all of them became grief-stricken, as if cut down by the sharp edge of weapons.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Rudra
Offering: dipa
Cosmic Event: Psychophysical collapse as a sign of divine concealment (tirodhāna): loss of steadiness and clarity in the offenders
The verse uses vivid similes to show how quickly worldly confidence collapses under karmic pressure and divine ordinance; it points the seeker toward steadiness in devotion to Pati (Shiva), rather than reliance on external supports.
The instability of the mind and society—“like lamps in wind”—highlights the need for a stable refuge; in Shaiva practice that refuge is Saguna Shiva worship through the Linga, which anchors attention and purifies emotion into bhakti.
A practical takeaway is japa of the Panchakshara mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to stabilize the mind in distress; optionally support it with Tripundra (bhasma) and Rudraksha as reminders of impermanence and Shiva-centered composure.
