The verse highlights dharmic humility: before taking major decisions, one should first honor the worthy (sages) through proper pūjā and then seek counsel. In a Shaiva Siddhānta lens, outer ritual becomes fruitful when joined to right discernment (viveka) and respect for enlightened guidance.
While the verse is about honoring sages, it reflects the broader Shaiva principle that worship (pūjā) must be performed “yathocita”—with correct attitude and procedure. Such disciplined reverence is the same foundation used in Saguna Shiva worship, including Linga pūjā, where honoring Shiva’s devotees and teachers is considered integral to devotion.
The takeaway is to perform pūjā with proper upacāras (offerings and honors) and then engage in reflective deliberation with the wise. Practically, one may begin with respectful salutation and simple worship, followed by quiet contemplation and seeking guidance from competent teachers—rather than acting from ego or haste.
