मेना-शिवदर्शन-प्रस्थानम् | Menā’s Quest to Behold Śiva
Departure for Śiva’s Darśana
शिवस्य गणका एते न शिवोयं शिवापतिः । इत्येवं त्वं ततस्तां वै अवोच ऋषिसत्तम
śivasya gaṇakā ete na śivoyaṃ śivāpatiḥ | ityevaṃ tvaṃ tatastāṃ vai avoca ṛṣisattama
“These are only Śiva’s gaṇas, His attendants; this is not Śiva Himself, but Śivapati, the Lord of Śivā (Pārvatī).” Having said so, O best of sages, you then spoke those words to her.
Sūta Gosvāmī (narrating to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
It distinguishes the Supreme Pati (Śiva) from His gaṇas, guiding the seeker to direct devotion toward Śiva Himself—the liberating Lord—rather than mistaking attendants or secondary beings for the ultimate refuge.
It reinforces correct identification of the object of worship: Saguna Śiva (and the Śiva-liṅga as His supreme emblem) is the Pati, while gaṇas are His servants; worship is meant to culminate in Śiva as the highest reality and giver of grace.
A practical takeaway is ekāgratā (one-pointedness): perform japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with clear bhāva that the mantra is directed to Śiva, the Pati, not to subordinate beings.
