Brāhmaṇī-Svargati-Varṇana: Account of a Brāhmaṇa Woman’s Ascent to Heaven
तयोक्तं च समाकर्ण्य स्थितस्य ब्राह्मणस्ततः । प्रत्युवाच विनीतात्मा कथ्यते किं वदेति च
tayoktaṃ ca samākarṇya sthitasya brāhmaṇastataḥ | pratyuvāca vinītātmā kathyate kiṃ vadeti ca
Hearing what the two had spoken, the brāhmaṇa who stood there—humble in spirit—replied: “What is being said? What is it you mean to declare?”
Suta Goswami (narrating the Kotirudra Saṃhitā account to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya; the direct speaker within the verse is the Brāhmaṇa)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Humility (vinīta-ātmatā) and inquiry are framed as the soul’s turning from outward travel to inner discernment—key to loosening pāśa (bondage) through right understanding.
Role: teaching
The verse highlights vinaya (humility) and sincere inquiry as the proper doorway to sacred knowledge; in Shaiva devotion, approaching Shiva’s truth begins with a disciplined, ego-free mind that asks clearly and listens deeply.
Jyotirlinga and Saguna-Shiva narratives are transmitted through respectful questioning and attentive hearing (śravaṇa). This verse models the devotee’s attitude—humble receptivity—by which the meaning of Linga worship and Shiva’s grace becomes intelligible.
The takeaway is śravaṇa–manana: listen carefully to sacred talk and then ask precise, humble questions. As a practice, one may begin worship with a quiet recitation of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to steady the mind before inquiry.
