Episode of Obstacles to Gautama; Gaṇeśa’s Appearing Through Misguided Worship
यावदाश्रममध्ये त्वं तावदेव हविर्भुजः । पितरश्च न गृह्णंति ह्यस्मद्दत्तं हि किञ्चन
yāvadāśramamadhye tvaṃ tāvadeva havirbhujaḥ | pitaraśca na gṛhṇaṃti hyasmaddattaṃ hi kiñcana
So long as you remain within the bounds of the āśrama, you are indeed the consumer of the havis, the oblation; and the Pitṛs, the Ancestors, do not accept anything at all that is offered by us.

The verse stresses maryādā (sacred discipline): spiritual acts bear fruit only when done within rightful dharmic boundaries. When order is violated, even offerings meant for higher recipients (like the Pitṛs) fail to connect, indicating that purity of conduct is integral to grace and merit.
In Shaiva practice, Saguna Shiva worship (including Linga-pūjā) is upheld by niyama—cleanliness, right place, and right conduct. The verse echoes that without observing prescribed limits and sanctity, ritual intention does not reach its divine or ancestral recipients, reinforcing disciplined devotion as part of Shiva-bhakti.
Maintain āśrama-niyama and ritual purity: perform offerings (homa, tarpaṇa, śrāddha) in the proper place and manner, supported by Shiva-oriented japa (e.g., the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to steady the mind and preserve sanctity.
