Seeing them approaching the water, he restrained them. And there, many wives of the sages as well, who had come in search of water, were also stopped.

Tattva Level: pasha
Sthala Purana: The ‘stopping at the water’ episode introduces obstruction and social hierarchy at a tīrtha-like resource; such blockage (rodha) functions as narrative tirodhāna—concealment of harmony—necessitating later rectification through Śiva’s grace.
Significance: Warns that even in sacred spaces, ego and entitlement can obstruct dharma; pilgrims are instructed toward humility and equitable conduct at tīrthas.
The verse highlights dharmic restraint at a sacred place: even basic needs like water are governed by discipline and reverence, supporting purity of conduct during Shiva-centered pilgrimage.
In Kotirudra contexts, tirtha and Jyotirlinga worship emphasize outer purity reflecting inner devotion; controlling access near sacred water protects the sanctity that supports focused Linga-bhakti to Saguna Shiva.
The takeaway is niyama (observance): maintain cleanliness and restraint at holy waters, approach worship with controlled senses, and uphold disciplined conduct alongside mantra-japa such as the Panchakshara.
