ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग-तदुपलिङ्ग-माहात्म्यवर्णनम्
Narration of the Greatness of the Jyotirliṅga and Associated Liṅgas
हीनयोनौ यदा जातो ज्योतिर्लिंगं च पश्यति । तस्य जन्म भवेत्तत्र विमले सत्कुले पुनः
hīnayonau yadā jāto jyotirliṃgaṃ ca paśyati | tasya janma bhavettatra vimale satkule punaḥ
Even if one is born in a low condition, when one beholds the Jyotirliṅga, that person thereafter is born again in a pure and virtuous family—indeed, in an auspicious lineage.
Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: General darśana-phala: mere beholding of a Jyotirliṅga elevates destiny—transforming ‘hīna-yoni’ outcomes into future birth in a pure, virtuous lineage; emphasizes Śiva’s grace overriding karmic limitation.
Significance: Darśana of Jyotirliṅga is proclaimed as a powerful purifier that mitigates adverse karma and grants auspicious rebirth, preparing the soul for higher sādhana and eventual mokṣa.
Role: liberating
The verse teaches that Jyotirliṅga-darśana is a powerful act of Śiva-bhakti that purifies accumulated karma, uplifting the devotee’s future destiny toward a cleaner, more dharmic birth and circumstances.
The Jyotirliṅga is Saguna Śiva’s compassionate, accessible manifestation. Seeing it with reverence (darśana) is treated as direct contact with Śiva’s grace, which can override degrading karmic tendencies and reorient one toward purity and dharma.
A practical takeaway is to seek Jyotirliṅga-darśana with devotion—ideally accompanied by pañcākṣarī japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and simple liṅga-pūjā (water/abhisheka), as acts that reinforce purification and karmic uplift.
