Interpretive Discipline
एवं कृतनमस्कारं शिष्यन्दद्याद्गुरुः स्वयम् । सुशीलं यतवाचं तं विनयावनतं स्थितम्
evaṃ kṛtanamaskāraṃ śiṣyandadyādguruḥ svayam | suśīlaṃ yatavācaṃ taṃ vinayāvanataṃ sthitam
Thus, when the disciple has duly offered salutations, the Guru himself should instruct him—one of good conduct, restrained in speech, who stands humbly, bowed in reverence.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It teaches that Shiva-knowledge is transmitted through the Guru only to a disciple prepared by humility, self-restraint, and right conduct—qualities that loosen pāśa (bondage) and make the seeker fit for grace (anugraha).
Linga-worship is not merely external; the verse frames inner discipline—reverent salutation, humility, and controlled speech—as the proper vessel for receiving instruction that deepens Saguna devotion and leads toward realization of Shiva as Pati.
Perform respectful namaskāra to the Guru and maintain yama-like restraint (especially speech-control); then receive upadeśa—typically mantra and worship-method—so practice proceeds with vinaya (humility) and steadiness.
