Vāmadeva-mata: Rahasya-upadeśa
The Esoteric Teaching of Vāmadeva’s Doctrine
इति स्कन्दवचः श्रुत्वा वामदेवो महामुनिः । प्रश्रयावनतः प्राह मेघगम्भीरया गिरा
iti skandavacaḥ śrutvā vāmadevo mahāmuniḥ | praśrayāvanataḥ prāha meghagambhīrayā girā
Having thus heard Skanda’s words, the great sage Vāmadeva—bowed in humble reverence—spoke in a voice deep as thunderclouds.
Vāmadeva
The verse highlights the Shaiva virtue of praśraya (humble reverence): true reception of sacred teaching occurs when the listener bows the ego and responds with disciplined, weighty speech rooted in dharma.
Though the verse is narrative, it frames the proper inner attitude for Saguna Shiva worship—approaching the Lord (and His teachings through Skanda) with devotion, humility, and receptivity, which Shaiva Siddhanta treats as essential for grace (anugraha).
It implicitly recommends cultivating praṇāma and vinaya before recitation—begin with respectful bowing, then mantra-japa (such as the Panchakshara) or scriptural listening (śravaṇa) in a calm, steady voice and mind.
