व्यासशौनकादिसंवादः | Vyāsa–Śaunaka and the Sages: Opening Dialogue of the Kailāsa-saṃhitā
विशेषतो गुरुस्त्वं हि नान्योऽस्माकं महामते । परं भावं महेशस्य परया कृपया वद
viśeṣato gurustvaṃ hi nānyo'smākaṃ mahāmate | paraṃ bhāvaṃ maheśasya parayā kṛpayā vada
O great-souled one, you alone are truly our Guru—there is no other for us. Out of your supreme compassion, please tell us the highest inner reality of Maheśa (Lord Śiva).
A disciple/devotee addressing the revered Guru (within Kailasa-saṃhitā’s philosophical dialogue)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Highlights guru-niṣṭhā (exclusive reliance on the true Guru) as the doorway to knowing Maheśa’s ‘paraṃ bhāva’—a soteriological ‘pilgrimage’ from bondage to grace.
Role: liberating
It establishes the Guru as the indispensable guide to realizing Maheśa’s supreme reality, emphasizing that true knowledge of Śiva is received through grace (kṛpā) and right instruction, a key Shaiva Siddhanta theme.
By asking for Maheśa’s “parama bhāva,” the verse points from outer worship (such as Liṅga-pūjā and saguna devotion) toward grasping Śiva’s deepest nature—showing that ritual devotion matures into inner understanding through the Guru’s teaching.
The core practice implied is śaraṇāgati to the Guru and Śiva—approaching with humility and seeking instruction; in practice this aligns with disciplined japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and contemplative inquiry into Śiva’s nature as taught by the Guru.
