Vasiṣṭha

This short hymn of Vasiṣṭha prays to the Ādityas—especially Mitra and Varuṇa—for stability, protection of family lines, and freedom from inherited or externally-caused guilt. It asks that the worshippers become “foundation-like” as Dyāvā-Pṛthivī (Heaven and Earth), and culminates in a vision of the Angirases attaining Savitṛ’s treasure, with all the gods consenting to bless the sacrificer.

Mantra 1
आदित्यासो अदितयः स्याम पूर्देवत्रा वसवो मर्त्यत्रा । सनेम मित्रावरुणा सनन्तो भवेम द्यावापृथिवी भवन्तः ॥
May we be Ādityas, children of Aditi—strongholds in the divine way, and in the mortal way too. O Mitra and Varuṇa, winning and ever-winning, may we win; may we become in our becoming like Heaven and Earth—stable foundations for the work.

मित्रस्तन्नो वरुणो मामहन्त शर्म तोकाय तनयाय गोपाः । मा वो भुजेमान्यजातमेनो मा तत्कर्म वसवो यच्चयध्वे ॥
May Mitra and Varuṇa greatly increase for us a shelter—guarding our child and our offspring. Let us not suffer for a sin born from another; and O Vasus, do not fasten upon us that deed which you lay up (as consequence).
Mantra 3
तुरण्यवोऽङ्गिरसो नक्षन्त रत्नं देवस्य सवितुरियानाः । पिता च तन्नो महान्यजत्रो विश्वे देवाः समनसो जुषन्त ॥
The swift-moving Angirases, journeying in the way of the divine Savitar, attain the Treasure. And may the mighty Father, worthy of sacrifice, grant that to us; may all the gods, of one accord, take delight in it within us.
