Sukta 42

Sukta 6.42

Rishi

Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya) tradition.

Devata

Indra (heroic 'nár' as Indra/Indra-like power; hymn is Indra-oriented in this sequence).

Chandas

Jagatī (probable; longer cadence typical—exact syllable count should be verified against a critical text).

This short Indra-hymn urges the ritual community to bring the Soma and all “plenitudes” to the heroic Nár—Indra as the straight-going, goal-reaching power who does not fall behind. It links correct offering and praise with Indra’s awakened knowing and bold increase, and it seeks his protection against hostile speech, curses, and assaults upon the sacrificer.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Bring to him, facing him, all things for his increase— to the knower. To the man who goes straight to the goal, who has come, who does not lag behind, bring the plenitudes.

Mantra 2

Come to him; approach him with the Somas—to Indra, the most drinker of Soma. With immeasurable pressed drops, with the straight-driving force, draw near to Indra.

Mantra 3

When you are adorned and met with the pressed bright drops, with the Somas, then the wise one knows of everything; the bold spirit seeks ever more and more of That.

Mantra 4

To him, to him indeed, O Adhvaryu, bring forward the pressed Soma-essence. Perhaps the conquering one, with his battling host, will ward off the assault of the curse and the hostile word.
