Sukta 10.185
Mitra–Aryaman–Varuṇa (Ādityas; guardians of ṛta)
This brief three-verse hymn invokes the “Three” Ādityas—Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuṇa—as vast supports of ṛta (cosmic order) and as protectors of human life. It asks for their shining strength and unassailable guardianship so that hostile forces and evil speech cannot gain power on one’s path. The hymn culminates in the promise that Aditi’s sons grant continuous light and vitality to the mortal they favor.
Mantra 1
महि त्रीणामवोऽस्तु द्युक्षं मित्रस्यार्यम्णः । दुराधर्षं वरुणस्य ॥
May the vast support of the Three be ours— the shining strength of Mitra and Aryaman, and the unassailable might of Varuṇa—so our life may stand in the clear order of the Truth.
Mantra 2
नहि तेषाममा चन नाध्वसु वारणेषु । ईशे रिपुरघशंसः ॥
For those upheld by these powers, no hostile will—neither near at hand nor on the difficult roads and obstructing passages—can rule; the evil-speaking adversary finds no sovereignty there.
Mantra 3
यस्मै पुत्रासो अदितेः प्र जीवसे मर्त्याय । ज्योतिर्यच्छन्त्यजस्रम् ॥
To the mortal for whom Aditi’s sons advance the power to live, they unceasingly grant light—so life may be sustained by a continual illumination rather than by struggle in darkness.
They are Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuṇa—three Ādityas (sons of Aditi) who guard ṛta, uphold right conduct, and protect human life.
It asks for strong divine support, protection from hostility and harmful speech, safety on difficult paths, and steady inner “light” that sustains life.
It can be recited at dawn or before starting a journey or important task, with a brief intention to live truthfully (ṛta) and to seek clarity, protection, and harmony.
