महोदरवधः (The Slaying of Mahodara)
महोदरस्तुसङ्कृद्धश्शरैःकाञ्चनभूषणैः । चिच्छेदपाणिपादोरुन्वानराणांमहाहवे ।।6.98.9।।
mahodaras tu saṅkruddhaḥ śaraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ | ciccheda pāṇipādorūn vānarāṇāṃ mahāhave || 6.98.9 ||
In that great battle, Mahodara—seized by fury—shot arrows adorned with gold and, striking hands, feet, and thighs, cruelly severed the limbs of the Vānara warriors.
In that great war, enraged Mahodara with arrows decked in gold shattered the Vanaras by attacking on hands, legs, and thighs.
The verse highlights how uncontrolled anger (krodha) in conflict leads to ruthless harm and moral decline; it implicitly contrasts disciplined, dharma-guided strength with violence driven by rage.
During the climactic war at Laṅkā, the rākṣasa warrior Mahodara, enraged, uses gold-decked arrows to maim Vānara fighters by severing their limbs, escalating the brutality of the battlefield.
