सीतासान्त्वनम् / Hanuman Consoles Sita with the News of Victory
भाग्यवैषम्यदोषेणपुरस्ताद्धुष्कृतेन च ।मयैतत्प्राप्यसर्वंस्वकृतंह्युपभुज्यते ।।6.116.41।।
bhāgya-vaiṣamya-doṣeṇa purastād duṣkṛtena ca | mayaitat prāpya sarvaṃ svakṛtaṃ hy upabhujyate ||6.116.41||
Through the harsh imbalance of fate—and through my own past wrongdoing—this has come upon me. Truly, one must undergo the results of one’s own deeds.
Personal accountability (karma): Sita frames suffering as connected to prior causes, discouraging revenge and encouraging ethical self-restraint and truthfulness about consequences.
Sita explains why she does not approve of anger toward the rākṣasīs, interpreting her ordeal through fate and the fruits of actions.
Forbearance (kṣamā) and moral clarity—Sita accepts hardship without endorsing retaliatory cruelty.
