vivṛtya nayane krūre muṣṭim udyamya dakṣiṇam | maithilīṃ hantum ārabdhaḥ strībhir hāhākṛtaṃ tadā ||
Opening his cruel eyes wide and raising his right fist, Rāvaṇa began to strike Maithilī; then the women there cried out in alarm, “Alas! Alas!”
