लङ्कादाहानन्तरचिन्ता — Hanuman’s Post-Conflagration Self-Examination and Assurance of Sita’s Safety

न हि धर्मात्मनस्तस्य भार्याममिततेजसः।स्वचारित्राभिगुप्तां तां स्प्रष्टुमर्हति पावकः।।।।

na hi dharmātmanas tasya bhāryām amita-tejasaḥ | sva-cāritrābhiguptāṁ tāṁ spraṣṭum arhati pāvakaḥ ||

For fire cannot rightly touch that woman—guarded by her own chastity—who is the wife of that righteous man of immeasurable splendour.

'Fire cannot touch that lady who is protected by her own chastity and who is wedded to the righteous man of immasureable glory.

Dharma and satya are depicted as inviolable shields: a life of chastity and a righteous marital bond are presented as forces that repel impurity and harm.

Hanumān reasons that Sītā could not have been harmed by the fire because her chastity and her association with righteous Rāma make her spiritually protected.

Sītā’s steadfast chastity (cāritra) and Rāma’s righteousness (dharmātmatā).
