Shloka 5.55.22

लङ्कादाहानन्तरचिन्ता — Hanuman’s Post-Conflagration Self-Examination and Assurance of Sita’s Safety

अथवा चारुसर्वाङ्गी रक्षिता स्वेन तेजसा।न नशिष्यति कल्याणी नाग्निरग्नौ प्रवर्तते।।।।

athavā cāru-sarvāṅgī rakṣitā svena tejasā | na naśiṣyati kalyāṇī nāgnir agnau pravartate ||

Or else, that auspicious lady of lovely limbs is protected by her own radiance; she will not perish—for fire does not act upon fire.

'On the other hand a beautiful and auspicious lady like Sita will be protected by her own splendour and will not perish as fire cannot extinguish fire. (Sita is pure like fire. Here the great sage Valmiki is suggesting the future incident in which Sita emerged safe from 'Agni-pariksha' or fire-ordeal.)

Interpreting favorable omens, Hanumān begins to hope that Sītā’s innate purity and spiritual brilliance shielded her from the conflagration.

Sītā’s auspiciousness and inner radiance—her chastity and purity are implied as a safeguarding force.
