अभिज्ञानमणि-प्रदानम् — The Signet Jewel as Proof and the Consolation of Sita
तवादर्शनजः शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्।दुःखाद्धुःखपरामृष्टां दीपयन्निव वानर।।।।
tavādarśanajaḥ śoko bhūyo māṃ paritāpayet | duḥkhād duḥkhaparāmṛṣṭāṃ dīpayann iva vānara ||
The grief born of not seeing you again would torment me all the more, O Vānara—like a fire rekindling one already scorched by sorrow.
"My agony would be increased further by not seeing you. It would be inflamming my agony and I would be even more pained.
Dharma includes sensitivity to another’s vulnerability; one should not ignite fresh anguish in the afflicted by creating hope and then withdrawing it carelessly.
Sītā explains that Hanumān’s disappearance after this meeting would intensify her suffering, because the brief comfort of contact would be followed by sharper loss.
