मैत्रीप्रतिज्ञा-वैरकारणप्रश्नः (Friendship Vow and Inquiry into the Cause of Enmity)
यत्नवांश्च सुदुष्टात्मा मद्विनाशाय राघव।बहुशस्तत्प्रयुक्ताश्च वानरा निहता मया।।
yatnavāṃś ca suduṣṭātmā madvināśāya rāghava | bahuśas tatprayuktāś ca vānarā nihatā mayā ||
O Rāghava, that utterly wicked one made repeated efforts to destroy me; and many monkeys dispatched by him were slain by me.
'O Rama! this evil-minded one made several attempts to kill me. The monkeys he sent to kill me were themselves killed.
The verse contrasts unjust aggression with the dharmic right to self-preservation; repeated attempts to kill an innocent are adharma, while defense of life is legitimate.
Sugrīva explains that Vāli repeatedly tried to have him killed by sending attackers, whom Sugrīva fought off.
Courage and endurance under persecution, coupled with truthful disclosure to a righteous judge-like ally (Rāma).
