Shloka 4.7.17

काकुत्स्थस्य शोकनिग्रहः—सुग्रीवसान्त्वनम् (Rama’s Grief Restrained—Sugriva’s Consolation)

कर्तव्यं यद्वयस्येन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च।अनुरूपं च युक्तं च कृतं सुग्रीव तत्त्वया।।

kartavyaṃ yad vayasyena snigdhena ca hitena ca | anurūpaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca kṛtaṃ sugrīva tattvayā ||

“O Sugrīva, you have done exactly what a friend—affectionate and truly well-wishing—ought to do: what is fitting and proper.”

'O Sugriva! you have done what a friend should have done in a befitting manner with your sweet words and good wishes.

Dharma of friendship: a true friend speaks with affection and seeks the other’s good in a way that is appropriate to the situation.

Rāma responds to Sugrīva’s consoling counsel by acknowledging it as the proper duty of a sincere friend.

Sugrīva’s loyal friendship (sakhya-dharma) and Rāma’s gratitude and fairness in recognizing it.
