Shloka 4.49.9

एकोनपञ्चाशः सर्गः (Sarga 49) — Aṅgada Re-energizes the Southern Search Party

सुग्रीवः कोपनो राजा तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च वानरः।भेतव्यं तस्य सततं रामस्य च महात्मनः।।।।

sugrīvaḥ kopano rājā tīkṣṇadaṇḍaś ca vānaraḥ | bhetavyaṃ tasya satataṃ rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ||

Sugrīva, the Vānara king, is quick to anger and severe in punishment; we must always remember our accountability—both to him and to the great-souled Rāma.

'Sugriva, the monkey king, is wrathful and awards severe punishment. We should ever bear in mind the (purpose of the) great self, Rama.

Dharma as accountability to rightful authority and to a righteous cause: one must not neglect an entrusted mission, knowing the moral and social consequences.

The troop is warned that failure and delay have consequences under Sugrīva’s rule and in relation to Rāma’s purpose.

Responsibility—acting with awareness of duty to leaders and to the larger ethical mission.
