Shloka 4.24.11
वालिवधोत्तरशोकः — Sugriva’s Remorse and Tara’s Lament after Vali’s Death
द्रुमशाखावभग्नोऽहं मुहुर्तं परिनिष्टनन्।सान्त्वयित्वा त्वनेनोक्तो न पुनः कर्तुमर्हसि।।
druma-śākhāvabhagno ’haṃ muhūrtaṃ pariniṣṭanan | sāntvayitvā tv anenokto na punaḥ kartum arhasi ||
When I was struck down by a tree-branch, I cried out for a while; but he consoled me and said, “It is not proper to do this again.”
'When my brother hit me with the branch of a tree I screamed for a while. But he pacified me and said it was improper and he would not repeat it.
It underscores restraint and corrective conscience: even after causing harm, one should recognize impropriety, console the injured, and resolve not to repeat wrongdoing.
Sugrīva recalls an earlier incident where Vāli hurt him but then repented and forbade repetition, showing Vāli’s capacity for self-correction.
