पम्पा-तीर-वर्णनम् / Rama’s Lament at Pampa and the Approach to Rishyamuka
मम त्वयं विना वासः पुष्पमासे सुदुस्सहः।पश्य लक्ष्मण संरागः तिर्यग्योनिगतेष्वपि।यदेषा शिखिनी कामाद्भर्तारं रमतेऽन्तिके।।।।
mama tvayā vinā vāsaḥ puṣpamāse sudussahaḥ |
paśya lakṣmaṇa saṃrāgaḥ tiryag-yoni-gateṣv api |
yad eṣā śikhinī kāmād bhartāraṃ ramate 'ntike ||
For me, dwelling in this flower-season is utterly unbearable without her. Look, Lakṣmaṇa—passion exists even among creatures born as animals and birds: this peahen, from desire, sports close to her mate.
'It is extremely unbearable for me to stay in the forest during this season of flowers (Spring). Look at the passion even among beasts and birds, O Lakshmana! And craving for love, the peahen sports near her mate.
The verse underscores dharma as loyalty and rightful union: spring naturally draws pairs together, but Rāma’s separation is due to adharma; his unbearable pain becomes a moral impetus to restore justice and truth.
In spring near Pampā, Rāma tells Lakṣmaṇa that the season is intolerable without Sītā and points to peahens sporting with mates as a contrast to his loss.
Constancy in love and purpose: Rāma’s longing does not weaken his dharmic aim; it strengthens his resolve to recover Sītā and re-establish moral order.
