Earlier, when my beloved lived in the āśrama, she would hear that very sound, call me to her with delight, and rejoice exceedingly.
'While in the hermitage in the past, my beloved was very glad to hear such sounds, invite me to join her and rejoice again.
The dharma of marital commitment (pativratā/patnī-dharma and the husband’s fidelity) is highlighted through remembrance of mutual joy rooted in lawful, devoted companionship.
Rāma recalls earlier life with Sītā in the āśrama; present separation makes even familiar sounds evoke loss.
Constancy in love and gratitude: Rāma honors shared past happiness and remains emotionally bound to Sītā alone.
