Shloka 1.46.2
दितितपः-शक्रपरिचर्या-गर्भभेदः (Diti’s Penance, Indra’s Service, and the Severing of the Embryo)
हतपुत्राऽस्मि भगवंस्तव पुत्रैर्महाबलै:।शक्रहन्तारमिच्छामि पुत्रं दीर्घतपोऽर्जितम्।।1.46.2।।
mā rudo mā rudaś ceti garbhaṃ śakro 'bhyabhāṣata | bibheda ca mahātejā rudantam api vāsavaḥ || 1.46.20 ||
Indra addressed the embryo, saying, “Do not weep, do not weep,” yet mighty Vāsava still split it even as it cried.
"O adorable one, your highly powerful sons, (devatas) have killed mine through extensive austerities. I am desirous of obtaining a (mighty) son capable of killing Indra.
Dharma requires coherence between word and deed (satya in action). Consoling speech while continuing harm exposes the ethical failure of performative compassion.
Indra speaks soothingly to the crying embryo but continues cutting it with his power.
The verse emphasizes (by contrast) the virtue of integrity—true compassion must restrain violence, not accompany it.
