बालकाण्ड सर्ग ३६ — गङ्गा-प्रभवप्रश्नः, शिवतेजोधारणं, कार्त्तिकेय-जन्म, उमाशापः
एवमुक्तास्सुरास्सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्वृषभध्वजम्।यत्तेज: क्षुभितं ह्येतत्तद्धरा धारयिष्यति।।।।
evam uktāḥ surāḥ sarve pratyūcur vṛṣabhadhvajam |
yat tejaḥ kṣubhitaṁ hy etat tad dharā dhārayiṣyati ||
Thus addressed, all the gods replied to the bull-bannered Lord: “This disturbed potency—Earth will bear it.”
Thus questioned, all the devatas replied to the bearer of the flag with bull as its symbol (Siva), saying, "The earth will contain the disturbed vital fluid".
Dharma is the wise allocation of burden: the Devas propose Earth as the proper support for a force too great for individual beings.
The Devas answer Śiva’s question about where his tejas can be safely contained.
Prudence and collective counsel: the Devas respond with a solution aimed at preserving cosmic stability.
