सीताहरण-विलापः / The Lament at Jatāyu and the Abduction of Sītā
त्राहि मामद्य काकुत्स्थ लक्ष्मणेति वराङ्गना।सुसन्त्रस्ता समाक्रन्दच्छृण्वतां तु यथान्तिके।।।।
tatas tu sā cāru-datī śuci-smitā vinākṛtā bandhu-janena maithilī |
apaśyatī rāghava-lakṣmaṇāv ubhau vivarṇa-vaktrā bhaya-bhāra-pīḍitā ||
Then Maithilī—fair-toothed and pure-smiling—was severed from her kinsfolk; unable to see either Rāghava or Lakṣmaṇa, her face grew pale, crushed beneath the burden of fear.
Terribly frightened, the beautiful lady (Sita) cried bitterly, 'O Rama, O Lakshmana, save me', as if they were close by and were listening to her.
Dharma is shown through the tragedy of its violation: separation from rightful protectors and kin is depicted as a consequence of adharma, calling attention to the duty to safeguard family and the innocent.
After being seized, Sītā is isolated from her relatives and cannot see Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, heightening her fear.
Sītā’s purity and dignity (śuci-smitā), maintained even as she suffers—her character is described in terms of auspiciousness and grace, not moral collapse.
