Matsya Purana — Rasakalyāṇinī Vrata: Magha-based Goddess Worship
नवार्बुदसहस्रं तु न दुःखी जायते नरः सुवर्णकमलं गौरि मासि मासि ददन्नरः अग्निष्टोमसहस्रस्य यत्फलं तदवाप्नुयात् //
navārbudasahasraṃ tu na duḥkhī jāyate naraḥ suvarṇakamalaṃ gauri māsi māsi dadannaraḥ agniṣṭomasahasrasya yatphalaṃ tadavāpnuyāt //
O Gaurī, a man who gives a golden lotus month after month is not born into suffering for nine thousand crores (of years); he attains the very merit obtained from performing a thousand Agniṣṭoma sacrifices.
This verse does not address pralaya or cosmology; it focuses on dāna (charitable giving) and the resulting puṇya (religious merit) and freedom from suffering.
It promotes a householder’s dharma of regular charity: sustained, periodic giving (monthly) is praised as a practical path to merit comparable to major Vedic sacrifices, making high ritual ideals accessible through dāna.
The ritual point is merit-equivalence: gifting a suvarṇa-kamala (golden lotus) monthly is said to yield the fruit of a thousand Agniṣṭoma Soma-sacrifices, highlighting dāna as a potent ritual substitute or complement.
