Matsya Purana — Paurava Genealogy: Bharata
तस्मिन्काले तु भरतो बहुभिर् ऋतुभिर्विभुः पुत्रनैमित्तिकैर्यज्ञैर् अयजत्पुत्रलिप्सया //
tasminkāle tu bharato bahubhir ṛtubhirvibhuḥ putranaimittikairyajñair ayajatputralipsayā //
At that time, the mighty Bharata, longing for offspring, performed many seasonal sacrifices—rites undertaken for the sake of obtaining a son.
This verse does not discuss Pralaya; it focuses on dynastic continuity through ritual acts, showing how progeny is sought to sustain lineage and social order.
It presents a king’s dharmic responsibility to secure succession through sanctioned Vedic-Puranic rites; performing seasonal yajnas for progeny is portrayed as a legitimate, duty-aligned pursuit of heirs.
The ritual significance is the emphasis on putra-nimittika (son-oriented) yajnas performed across ṛtus (seasonal cycles), highlighting regulated sacrificial timing and purpose rather than Vastu or temple architecture.
