Matsya Purana — Navagraha Sacrifice for Planetary Pacification and Prosperity
तस्य तावद्विधिं वक्ष्ये पुराणश्रुतिभाषितम् गर्तस्योत्तरपूर्वेण वितस्तिद्वयविस्तृताम् //
tasya tāvadvidhiṃ vakṣye purāṇaśrutibhāṣitam gartasyottarapūrveṇa vitastidvayavistṛtām //
Now I shall explain its procedure, as stated in the Purāṇic tradition: on the north‑eastern side of the pit (garta), it should be laid out with a breadth of two vitastis (spans).
This verse does not discuss Pralaya; it belongs to the Matsya Purana’s Vastuvidya-style procedural instructions, focusing on directional layout and measurement.
It supports the duty of performing works—construction or rites—according to śāstra: correct orientation (north-east) and standard measures (vitasti) are presented as disciplined, dharmic practice for householders and rulers overseeing public/ritual works.
It specifies a Vastu-aligned placement on the north-east (Iśānya) side and fixes a concrete dimension—two vitastis—indicating standardized, direction-sensitive planning for a pit/trench used in construction or ritual contexts.
