Matsya Purana — Ekoddiṣṭa Śrāddha
अनेन विधिना सर्वम् अनुमासं समाचरेत् सूतकान्ताद्द्वितीये ऽह्नि शय्यां दद्याद्विलक्षणाम् //
anena vidhinā sarvam anumāsaṃ samācaret sūtakāntāddvitīye 'hni śayyāṃ dadyādvilakṣaṇām //
In this manner, one should duly perform all the prescribed observances for the whole month. Then, after the period of sūtaka (ritual impurity) has ended, on the second day one should give in charity a special bed, as enjoined.
This verse is not about pralaya; it addresses dharma in daily life—specifically observances during a month-long period connected with ritual impurity (sūtaka) and the prescribed gift after it ends.
It frames a householder’s (and by extension a ruler’s) duty to uphold ritual order: following the stated procedure for the full month and completing it with an appropriate dāna (gift), here a prescribed śayyā-dāna on the second day after sūtaka ends.
The significance is ritual, not architectural: the verse prescribes a post-impurity charitable act—donating a ‘special bed’ (śayyā), a common dāna category in Purāṇic ritual manuals.
