Arjuna said: “Having conquered all the realms and taken only wealth from them, I stood amid that wealth; therefore people call me ‘Dhanañjaya’—the Conqueror of Wealth.”
अर्जुन उवाच
The verse explains how a warrior’s epithet can arise from conduct and public memory: Arjuna is called Dhanañjaya because his victories brought in wealth/tribute. It also hints at a kṣatriya ethic—conquest linked with acquisition of resources—while framing reputation as grounded in recognizable deeds.
Arjuna is clarifying the origin of his name ‘Dhanañjaya’ by recounting that he conquered many realms and took wealth (as tribute), standing amid that collected treasure; hence people addressed him by that title.
