Dhaumya’s Enumeration of Eastern Tīrthas

Prācī-diś Tīrtha-kathana

Nārada said: “Just as Manu, just as Ikṣvāku, just as the greatly renowned Pūru, and just as King Pṛthu, son of Vena, became celebrated, so too are you renowned, O great king. As Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, once destroyed all enemies and, free from anxiety, protected the three worlds, so will you also destroy your foes and protect your subjects. O lotus-eyed ruler, having gained rightful sovereignty over the earth by your dharma, you will become famous—like Kārtavīrya Arjuna—through steadfast guardianship of your own duty.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches rājadharma: a king’s legitimacy and lasting fame arise from conquering through dharma, removing threats to order, and protecting subjects without anxiety—modeled on exemplary rulers like Manu, Ikṣvāku, Pūru, Pṛthu, and Indra.

Nārada is praising and encouraging the addressed king by placing him in a lineage of ideal sovereigns. He predicts that, like Indra defeating Vṛtra and safeguarding the worlds, the king will destroy enemies and rule the earth righteously, gaining renown comparable to Kārtavīrya Arjuna.
