मैत्रेयागमनम् — The Arrival of Maitreya and the Admonition to Duryodhana
सो<5यमासादितो दिष्ट्या भ्रातृहा काड्क्षितश्चिरम् । अनेन हि मम भ्राता बको विनिहत: प्रिय:,“आज सौभाग्यवश यह स्वयं मेरे यहाँ आ पहुँचा। भीम मेरे भाईका हत्यारा है, मैं बहुत दिनोंसे इसकी खोजमें था। राजन्! इसने (एकचक्रा नगरीके पास) वैत्रकीयवनमें ब्राह्मणका कपटवेष धारण करके वेदोक्त मन्त्ररूप विद्याबलका आश्रय ले मेरे प्यारे भाई बकासुरका वध किया था; वह इसका अपना बल नहीं था
so ’yam āsādito diṣṭyā bhrātṛhā kāṅkṣitaś ciram | anena hi mama bhrātā bako vinihataḥ priyaḥ ||
“By good fortune, this very man has now come into my reach. He is the slayer of my brother—one I have long been seeking. For it was by him that my dear brother Baka was killed.”
विदुर उवाच
The verse highlights how personal grief and kinship can drive a strong desire for retribution, while also framing events as guided by fortune (diṣṭyā). It foregrounds the ethical tension between justice for wrongdoing and the consuming impulse of vengeance.
A speaker identifies someone who has come within reach and declares that this person is the killer of the speaker’s beloved brother Baka, whom the speaker has been searching for a long time.
