Then, many bards—Sūtas and Māgadhas—endowed with sweet and well-trained voices, awakened Keśava (Śrī Kṛṣṇa) with the resounding blasts of conches and the booming of kettledrums.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the linkage between personal readiness and public responsibility: leaders are ceremonially roused by society’s voices and instruments, signaling that decisive action—especially in times of looming conflict—must be met with wakefulness, discipline, and awareness of duty.
Court bards (Sūtas and Māgadhas), using melodious chanting along with the loud sounds of conches and kettledrums, awaken Kṛṣṇa (Keśava), marking the start of an important day in the Udyoga Parva’s preparations and negotiations surrounding the impending war.
