Kṛṣṇa at Duryodhana’s House: Refusal of Hospitality and Departure to Vidura (कृष्णस्य धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनगमनम्)
evam āśvāsitā kuntī pratyuvāca janārdanam | putrādibhir abhidhvastā nigṛhya buddhijaṁ tamaḥ |
Thus reassured, Kuntī replied to Janārdana. Separated from her sons and the rest, she restrained the darkness born of bewildered understanding and then spoke—gathering herself with clarity and resolve amid distress.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even in separation and sorrow, one should restrain the ‘darkness’ of ignorance and regain steadiness of mind before speaking or deciding—an ethical emphasis on self-mastery and clear discernment (buddhi) in crisis.
After being consoled, Kuntī—distressed and apart from her sons—collects herself by checking delusion and then replies to Kṛṣṇa (Janārdana), setting up her ensuing words and counsel within the Udyoga Parva context.
