Krishna’s Entry into Hastināpura and Court Reception
duryodhana uvāca na paryāyo 'sti yad rājan śriyaṁ niṣkevalām aham | taiḥ sahemām upāśnīyāṁ yāvajjīvaṁ pitāmaha ||
Duryodhana said: “O King, O Grandsire, there is no possibility that I should share and enjoy this undivided prosperity together with them for as long as I live.”
The verse highlights how attachment to exclusive power and refusal to share (even within family) becomes an ethical failure that undermines dharma and makes reconciliation impossible, thereby paving the way to destructive conflict.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Duryodhana addresses the elder Bhīṣma and bluntly rejects any settlement in which he must share the kingdom’s prosperity with the Pāṇḍavas, signaling that compromise has collapsed.
